Colostrum is critical for providing immunity to the newly born calf as well as supplying essential nutrients

  • To maximise colostrum quality, ensure immediate milking of the cow as this will minimise dilution of immunoglobulins
  • The first colostrum should be administered within 1 hour of birth to heighten the calf's ability to absorb antibodies into the bloodstream
  • Target for colostrum intake for first feed should be 10% of bodyweight or 3-4 litres
  • A colostrometer is useful to determine quality
  • Extra good quality colostrum can be frozen as a reserve in times of shortage using the Coloquick system.  Avoid pooling of colostrum and storage at room temperature
